Special Education

The Special Education major has been designed to ensure adequate preparation to support professionals teaching students with disabilities through a program of study of professional education, special education core, and comprehensive standards. Students who complete the degree will attain the following skills and competencies:

  • Apply knowledge of instructing students with severe and multiple disabilities ages 5-21;
  • Teach and create learning experiences to develop student competence in subject matter;
  • Know how individual students learn and develop;
  • Create instruction that is adaptive to diverse learners;
  • Develop a broad repertoire of instructional strategies;
  • Create and maintain appropriate learning environments;
  • Be able to effectively use verbal, non-verbal, and media communication techniques;
  • Create instruction plans to enhance learning opportunities;
  • Use formal and informal assessment and be able to evaluate assessment;
  • Become reflective practitioners;
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and community.

 

LMU’s Special Education Comprehensive K-12 Education Program is aligned with the regulations and criteria that govern teacher Education programs by the State of Tennessee, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Internships

Teacher education candidates are placed in PK-12 Partnership Schools. These schools are located in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Graduate & Professional Opportunities

After completing your bachelor's degree, you may choose to continue your education by enrolling in the master of education program housed in LMU's Graduate Department of the Carter & Moyers School of Education.

Clubs & Organizations

Students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program belong to the Student Education Association (SEA), an organization devoted to encouraging professional development, addressing educational issues, and promoting professional ethics and standards.
