LMU Homecoming Celebration Planned for Oct. 11-13

Harrogate, Tennessee, October 3, 2018— Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will welcome alumni, students, friends and families to the main campus for LMU Homecoming beginning Oct. 11, with the Railsplitter 5K and concluding the evening of Saturday, Oct. 13, with Gather in the Gap, featuring food and entertainment in the historic town of Cumberland Gap. The schedule is packed with reunions, receptions, dedications, recognitions, tours and more. 

The Railsplitter 5K registration begins Thursday at 5:30 p.m. behind the LMU dining hall with the race starting there at 7 p.m. The 3.1 mile course follows the road and greenway trail to Harrogate City Park, loops and returns. Race fee includes a tee shirt, glow necklace and ice cream at the finish. Register online at alumni.LMUnet.edu/homecoming2018 for the race and other events. 

Friday will feature the unveiling of a plaque at historic Democrat Hollow at 2 p.m. and the recognition of the 70th anniversary of the Mary Mars Gymnasium at 3 p.m. The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum (ALLM) is hosting a reception and a WWI 100-Year Recognition at 4 p.m. 

Saturday kicks off with an LMU Memories Tour starting at the ALLM at 9 a.m. The Athletes Hall of Fame Reception and Induction Ceremony is 10 a.m. at Tex Turner Arena and the Reunion Luncheon is behind the LMU Dining Hall, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. with an inflatables play area for children. The Alumni Reception for Educators is at 1 p.m. at the Business-Education Building and also will include inflatables for children. A tour of the Valley of Sports begins at the Dining Hall at 12:30 p.m. followed by the Alumni Baseball Game and Alumni Softball Game at Lamar Hennon Field at 1 p.m. An All Sorority Tea is set for 2 p.m. at the Murray Alumni Lounge of the Carnegie Vincent Library.  At 3 p.m. at the Arnold Auditorium, ALLM, the Alumni Awards Ceremony and Reception will recognize new inductees for the Educators’, Literary and Professional Halls of Fame as well as Alumnus of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Young Alumnus of the Year. Those being honored include: Vickie Heatherly, ’77, Jim Yearwood, ’67, Natalie Sweet, ’08, Mark Goins, ’93, Robert Horton, ’70, John Irvine, Pat Peace, ’72, Michael “Rusty” Peace, ’89, Sheree Schneider, ’78, ’02, ’15, Susan Graves, ’75, Derrick Lindsay, ’12 and Helen Dotson, ’63.  

Gather in the Gap was added in recent years and gives alumni the opportunity to enjoy dining and entertainment at Angelo’s or Gap Creek Coffee House in Cumberland Gap on Saturday from 6 – 9 p.m.
